SWRS Smart Start 2020 Framework
Posted by Steve Noonkesser on 8/25/2020To prepare for reopening our schools folowing the statewide closure this past spring and in response to a requirement by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development that all districts submit a reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year, Southwest Region Schools has developed a school year 2020-2021 Smart Start Framework based on guidance and a framework provided by the department, which addresses a variety of areas related to public education in our communities.
This plan is based on guidance from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, the AK Department of Health & Human Services and health professionals. This plan is intended to allow us to operate school in a changing environment as safely as possible and will be revisited regularly to ensure that it is meeting the needs of our students and communities.

Statewide School Closure Through School Year End
Posted by Steve Noonkesser on 4/13/2020As per State of Alaska Health Mandate 013 - K-12 Public and Private Schools released on April 20, 2020, the statewide school closure of all K-12 public and private schools is being extended from May 1, 2020 to the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Despite the need to extend school building closures, student learning will continue, per each school district's individual plan, to provide distance-delivered educational services to students.
As school districts contemplate how to properly celebrate this year's graduates, COVID-19 Health Mandate 011 - Social Distancing is still in effect, which prohibits gathering for events, such as graduation.
We are saddened that we will not be able to gather this school year in a traditional manner for graduation, but want you to know that we are looking at options for celebrating our graduates and their accomplishments. We will have more information on plans for celebrating our senior class available in the coming days.
We will also be contining our meal service and current educational activities for students through our normal end of school year in May. As always, staff remains dedicated to our focus on student safety and learning.
